Easy, 4-Ingredient Homemade Mayonnaise (1)

Mayonnaise is a staple for sandwiches and salad dressings. Unfortunately the store-bought stuff is full of unnecessary ingredients. Thankfully, homemade mayonnaise is easy to make for yourself and packed with nutrition, too!

There’s what in my mayo?

If you’ve ever put a spoonful of mayo on your sandwich (a gluten-free one, of course), and decided to take a look at the ingredients, chances are you were pretty disappointed. Take a look at what’s in this major brand:

“Water, soybean oil, modified starch (corn, potato)**, eggs, sugar, salt, vinegar, lemon juice, sorbic acid**, and calcium disodium EDTA (used to protect quality), natural flavor, vitamin E.”

In case you were wondering, those double asterisks stand for ingredients not found in regular mayonnaise. Seriously, it actually says that on the bottle. Why in the world would they need to add things that they even admit aren’t necessary?

You’re right. They don’t.

All that you really need to make your own homemade mayonnaise are a few simple ingredients: eggs, oil, and vinegar. Yep, that’s it! Please note that the eggswill be raw, so it’s best to use fresh, pastured eggs, or at least organic ones!

Homemade mayonnaise is super easy to whip up, too. It can be done in a blender, in a food processor, or with a hand mixer. I usually place my ingredients in a 12 ounce mason jar, attach one beater to my hand mixer, and whirl away!

It only takes a few minutes, and your body will definitely thank you for leaving out all those extra ingredients. I know mayonnaise has gotten a kinda bad rap over the years, but it seriously is good for you – if you make it yourself. To start with, pick a healthy oil – I like to use avocado oil because it doesn’t have any flavor. I’ve used olive oil, too, but it doesn’t firm up the same way, and it also has an olive oily flavor. If you like that, be my guest!

Next up, find yourself some high quality eggs! I use my fresh ones (yay for backyard hens!), and if you can find pastured ones, please use those. If not, organic is fine. If you’re worried about using raw eggs in your homemade mayonnaise, don’t be. Eggs are full of nutrition, and all of it is easier for your body to digest when the eggs are raw! Eggs are packed full of vitamins like B6, folate, B12, A, D, E, and K, as well as calcium and iron!

If you’re like me and enjoy your mayo with a little kick, you can add in a bit of mustard or a tiny pinch of chili powder. Chipotle chili is delicious in homemade mayonnaise!

I’ve heard how easy homemade mayo is, and how the taste of the store-bought stuff doesn’t even compare, but I’ve never made it. This actually does seem pretty easy!

What a great idea! A lot of the newer blenders have blades too deep to make mayo or hollandaise and this is a perfect solution! Thanks for linking up to us on Throwback Thursday!

You could probably add a little honey, if you want. I’d start with 1/2 teaspoon and see what you think.
